Sr. Anne Atkinson R.I.P.
Anne died peacefully after a long and difficult illness in the care of the Sisters and Staff at Sallyville House surrounded by her loving family.
Anne was born in Booladuragh, Ballindaggin, Wexford on 1st January 1930 to Catherine (Nee O’Connor) and Thomas Atkinson. She was predeceased by her sisters Bessie and Kathy, her brothers Willie, Dinny, Jack and Tommy and her nephew Martin.
Anne is sadly missed by her sister Biddy, her sister-in-law Eilish, her nieces, nephews, extended family, many friends and her St. John of God Community.
Anne attended her local school in Ballindaggin. She entered the St. John of God Novitiate on 8th September 1948 and made her First Profession on 15th May 1951, receiving the name Colman. She made Final Profession on 13th May 1954.
Anne had many talents and skills, all of which were influenced by her warm, welcoming spirit and her ‘hearty’ laugh. Her resourcefulness and creativity came to the fore in her cooking skills and her love of gardening. She shared her giftedness through a lifetime of generous service to the St. John of God Community and beyond – in many different places of ministry. These included Ely Hospital, Kilmore Convent, Irish College Rome, Edenderry, Nigeria, Ennis (Cahercalla Hospital and St. Flannan’s College) and finally Wexford Convent.
Then Anne became unwell and she struggled with illness for many years until she was called to her heavenly home. She had transferred to Sallyville House in 2017.
While reposing in Sallyville House Chapel, prayers and fond memories were shared among her family and friends. Over the years, Anne had been very close to her family. Her wake concluded with a beautiful evening prayer surrounded by family and community.
Sr. Anne’s funeral Mass was celebrated in Rowe St. Church by Fr. Michael O’Shea (Wexford Parish), assisted by Fr. Jim Fegan PP Ballindaggin. She was buried in the Convent Cemetery, Newtown Road.
May her creative spirit enjoy the beauty of the celestial spheres.
