Sr. Genevieve Brennan R.I.P.
Sr. Genevieve (Eileen Patricia) Brennan was born in Newtown, Bagnelstown, Co. Carlow 15 March 1926. Her parents were Eileen and Patrick Brennan. Genevieve was one of a family of five, three sisters and one brother. She entered St. John of God Novitiate, Wexford, on 6 November, 1943; her First Profession was on 25 November, 1946, and her Final Profession in 1949.
Genevieve commenced her nursing training in the County Hospital, Wexford, in 1947 and completed her training at Mercy Hospital, Cork, in 1952. She ministered in Courtney Hill, Newry; District Hospital, Castlecomer; Wexford General Hospital, St. John’s Hospital, Enniscorthy; Wexford Convent and St. Columba’s Hospital, Thomastown. She retired to Kilkenny Convent in 1991 where she still continued to minister for many years.
Genevieve had many lovable qualities, she was essentially a gentle, kind, generous and caring person and those entrusted to her care experienced these qualities in abundance. She was also gifted with a ready wit and a sense of humour which endeared her to all and especially her Sisters in community. Needlecraft was her favourite pastime and her creations were much admired and sought after, particularly her cushions. Above all she was a woman of great faith who dedicated her whole life to serving God.
After a long illness patiently borne, Genevieve died peacefully surrounded by her family, friends and community Sisters on 16 March, 2009. Following Requiem Mass on 18 March, 2009 she was interred in Foulkstown Cemetery, Kilkenny. We thank God for all Genevieve has given throughout her life and pray that she is now enjoying the peace of God’s kingdom.
