The Sisters of St John of God were founded in 1871 in Wexford, by Bishop Thomas Furlong, Bishop of Ferns, and Sr. Visitation Clancy and her companions. Their mission was to care for the people of the diocese of Ferns who were suffering extreme spiritual and material poverty following the Great Famine in 1847...
In 1895 the Sisters of St John of God responded to a request from Bishop Matthew Gibney of Western Australia, to minister to the sick and attend to the pastoral and social needs of the people in his diocese. Eight Sisters responded to that call for help, arriving in Perth on 25th November 1895.
Over the years the original Sisters were joined by other women from both Ireland and Australia...
On their arrival in Pakistan in 1980, the Sisters began ministry in Bethania Hospital, Sialkot, a Centre for patients suffering predominantly from tuberculosis. In 1982 they commenced care in a Maternity hospital in Sargodha.They later developed primary health care programmes, both in the hospitals and surrounding villages...
