Lenten Season Wk: 6 The Grace of Earth: Animal Life

Increasingly we are recognising the preciousness of Earth, a small planet hospitable to life, and the terrible consequences for humans and the other than human inhabitants — plants, animals, the elements, —of the damage inflicted on our shared environment through human activity, such as carelessness, neglect and consumerism.

The psalmist reminds us of the gift of creation:

O LORD, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom you have made them all; the earth
is full of your creatures.

Ps 104:24

Over the 6 weeks of our Lenten journey we have been invited to focus on six aspects of Earth's life support systems: atmosphere, oceans, fresh water, land, plant life and animal life. As we "Gaze on the Mystery of our evolving changing universe", may these reflections encourage us to care for "our common home" and all that shares life with us, so beautifully expressed by Pope Francis in his Prayer for the Earth. We invite you to spend time with that prayer here.
