Gaze on the Mystery

'I could gaze at You for all my life, for evertime.' MJ Higgins RSM.

Have you ever taken time just to gaze at something and in the gazing you began to glimpse more and more of the reality of that which was the object of your gazing.

As you gaze on the Mystery of our Universe let it reveal its awesomeness, its connectivity, its compassion, its wisdom etc. to you.

Reflect on Scripture

Ponder Contemporary Readings

  • Notice the gentle movements of your spirit as you ponder these readings:

"Christians should have been the first to appreciate evolution and to recognize what God is doing – that God creates things that continue to create themselves from the inner divine Spirit. Christ is “the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation”  Colossians 1:15).
-Richard Rohr, Yes, And..: Daily Meditations p.136

"We are situated in a web of life. The same currents that run through our human blood also run through the swirling galaxies and the myriad of life-forms that pervade this planet: one and the same evolutionary current moves through all -  a single self-transcending current of all-pervading energy that brings new life out of seeming catastrophe."
-Ilia Delio, Christ in Evolution, p.21

"This we know. The earth does not belong to people. People belong to the earth. This we know. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the people of the earth. We did not weave the web of life. We are but a mere strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves."
- Chief Seattle

"The Universe Story has been a catalyst for our generation’s...movement toward a deeper, fuller, richer narrative that holds our experience of life itself in a coherent way.  For 13.7 billion years our universe has been evolving, moving in the direction of ...increasing complexity and greater consciousness. The cosmos itself is predominantly invisible, held together and expanded by the forces known as dark matter and dark energy. The Universe Story moves us into a place where we may witness the big picture, where we can stand back and glimpse the evolutionary process of which we have been a part."
- Judy Cannato, Field of Compassion:How the New Cosmology Is Transforming Spiritual Life, p.145.

Accompany the birthing of the new image of God that may be forming in you.

"Every happening, great and small, is a parable whereby God speaks to us, and the art of life is to get the message”
-Malcolm Muggeridge

The scriptures reveal a universe of mystery:  “The heavens are telling of the mystery of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of his hands’ (Psalm 19: 1).

Eugene Peterson in his contemporary bible “The Message” puts it this way:

God’s glory is on tour in the skies,
God-craft on exhibit across the horizon..

Their words aren’t heard,
    their voices aren’t recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
      unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.”

(From "The Message: Psalm: 19: 1, 3-4" by Eugene Peterson)

  • What does this Scripture passage say to you?

We are on this journey together. Our Call is to awaken, to listen, to gaze on the mystery that surrounds us in each moment of each new day and enveloping night. As Christopher Fry puts it, “The enterprise Is exploration into God.
Where are you making for?
