December 31 , Feast of the Holy Family

29 December 2017 | General Interest

The feast of the Holy Family emphasises the sacredness of the family unit, whatever its relational circumstances and composition.

Vittore Carpaccio, The Flight into Egypt (1500)

Chapter 1 of St Matthew's Gospel clearly shows that the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, was an unconventional family  - Mary and Joseph were betrothed but not living together, Mary became pregnant through divine intervention before marriage, Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, but through adoption, became the legal father.  Parenting means caring for, loving, protecting and all that is involved in rearing the sacred gift of a child.

In our rapidly evolving society we ask: what constitutes family today? As we ponder the unconventional and fragile situation of Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus, we are led to understand that family is about belonging, identity, love and support. In Amoris Laetitia Pope Francis asks us to be expansive, not to judge harshly or to impose rigid ideals of marriage "far removed from the concrete situations and practical possibilities of real families" (Amoris Laetitia 36).

  • What kind of family member am I?
  •  What is the quality of my close relationships?

We thank you, loving God that we are all part of your family.
