Our Common Home - Our Common Responsibility: Celebrating Laudato Si'

11 June 2017 | Australia

It is two years (18 June 2015) since the release of the encyclical Laudato Si' and the profound call by Pope Francis to galvanise all people to change our thinking, our spirituality and our way of living — 'a change of humanity' (LS 8) — to recognise that every living thing is connected and that all of life inhabits a common home (Earth). Every...all...

As Sisters of St John of God, we are called to 'Gaze on the mystery of our evolving changing universe'. Our Chapter call invites us into amazement and wonder at the uniqueness and diversity of the Earth community; to recognition of the interconnection of all life forms, and to action on behalf of the needs of Earth and Earth's people.

In 2016, on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (1 September) as a Jubilee 'gift', Pope Francis gave us the 8th Work of Mercy: Show Mercy to our Common Home.

As a spiritual work of mercy, 'care for our common home calls for "a grateful contemplation of God's world"
As a corporal work of mercy, 'care for our common home requires "simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness"...

The 8th Work of Mercy offers us all ways to express in our day to day living our responsibility to each other and to our planet.
