June, the Month of the Sacred Heart

3 June 2017 | General Interest

The Heart of Jesus is the ultimate symbol of God's mercy, the source from which salvation for all humanity comes. The heart has always been seen as the "centre" or essence of a person and the wellspring of our emotional lives and love.

We say things like, "you break my heart", "my heart sings", “she/he has a big heart", "getting to the heart of the matter" etc. One of the worst things we can level against someone is to say he/she is heartless. St John Chrysostom reputedly said :"The heart that unlocks the human heart unlocks the heart of God as well".  It is a fact: the only way we can know God is through love, not through knowledge.

We can know a lot about Jesus, but do we actually know Jesus the person?

The deepest longing of Christ's heart is that we discover how much he loves us, how we are really worth it! We need to know this!  There is a soul-hunger in many people today; many don't know where to turn to, but our faith assures us love brings endurance, it fills us with gratitude and stirs us to compassionate action. Mother Teresa once said: "A joyful heart is the inevitable result of a heart burning with love."

Scripture repeatedly assures us of God's love for us:
John 1: 4-10: "In this is love, not that we loved God but that God has first loved us."
Eph 2: 10: "You are my beloved...you are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus to know and witness to love."
1 Cor 10:31: "You are God's temple and God's spirit dwells in you."

This is who we really are! The problem is we cannot love God unless we see in him our own goodness. We are reflections of him. Theilard de Chardin,  SJ said: "With one hand God lovingly holds me, while with the other God shapes my being and the whole of creation."

  • Do I allow this loving God to hold and shape me?
  • Can I be more loving today? And tomorrow?

Let us transform our world by being love in action in the month of June!
